Apple’s September 9, 2026 event will go down as one of the company’s most important iPhone launches in years. Under new CEO John Ternus, Apple introduced its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The company also unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5.
The iPhone 18 Pro generation focuses on camera control, sustained performance, battery life and Apple Intelligence, while the iPhone Duo represents an entirely new direction for the iPhone. It opens into a 7.6-inch display while retaining a smaller 5.4-inch outer screen for conventional phone use.
The event also pushed Apple’s health strategy further with a new Health Sensing System for its watches, while AirPods 5 bring active noise cancellation to Apple’s more affordable open-ear AirPods line.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are the conventional flagship phones in Apple’s 2026 lineup, but Apple has made some substantial changes beneath the familiar design.
Both models use an aluminum unibody construction with Ceramic Shield 2 protection and come in black, silver, glacier and the new burgundy finish. The iPhone 18 Pro measures 150.0mm tall, 71.9mm wide and 8.75mm thick, weighing 211 grams. The Pro Max measures 163.4mm by 78.0mm and weighs 249 grams.
The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, while the Pro Max has a 6.9-inch panel. Both support ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On display functionality, HDR, True Tone and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor peak brightness.
Apple has also redesigned the Dynamic Island. It is smaller while being capable of displaying up to three Live Activities simultaneously, giving users more information without opening apps.

A20 Pro performance
At the center of both phones is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip.
The 2nm-based processor has a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and a new Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says the GPU is up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro, while the Neural Engine provides twice the AI processing power. Memory bandwidth also increases by 50%.
That matters beyond benchmark scores. The extra performance is intended to keep demanding games running smoothly, accelerate computational photography and make more advanced Apple Intelligence features possible directly on the device.
Apple has also redesigned thermal management. A larger vapor chamber gives the iPhone 18 Pro up to a 40% improvement in sustained performance compared with the previous generation, according to Apple.
The biggest camera upgrade

The headline camera change is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture.
This is more significant than simply increasing megapixels. The variable-aperture system allows the camera to automatically change how much light enters the lens and how much of a scene remains in focus. Users can also manually select among four aperture settings.
Apple says the system can open to ƒ/1.48 for improved low-light photography and narrow to ƒ/4 when greater depth of field is desirable.
For everyday users, that should mean better flexibility when photographing people, groups, night scenes and subjects where background blur matters. For enthusiasts and creators, manual aperture control moves the iPhone closer to the type of photographic control normally associated with dedicated cameras.
The upgraded computational photography system also improves detail, while Photographic Styles gains texture and grain controls.
Video receives attention too. Users can apply Cinematic effects after recording at up to 60fps, while Time-lapse supports 4K Dolby Vision HDR. Audio Mix has also been updated to improve voices and isolate music.
Apple is additionally introducing Apple Reference Image, which can create an unalterable reference version of a photograph to help establish what the camera actually captured. This is particularly interesting at a time when AI-generated and heavily edited images are becoming harder to distinguish from photographs.

Battery and connectivity
Battery life is another major improvement.
Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback, while the Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours on eSIM-only models. The Pro can reach 50% charge in around 15 minutes with wired charging, or around 30 minutes wirelessly.
Connectivity includes Apple’s N1 wireless chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, alongside the new C2 cellular modem. C2 improves cellular efficiency and upload performance and supports mmWave in the United States.
Price and availability
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the U.S., while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Both are offered with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options. Pre-orders begin September 12, with availability from September 18 in more than 65 countries and regions, including India, the UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore and the UAE.

Apple’s First Foldable iPhone: iPhone Duo

The biggest announcement of the Apple September event 2026 was undoubtedly the iPhone Duo.
Apple’s first foldable iPhone uses a passport-like design. Closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer display; opened, it reveals a 7.6-inch folding OLED display, making it the largest display ever put into an iPhone.
The inner display uses a nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections and make the fold less visually distracting. Both screens support ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On display and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor peak brightness. Apple also says both displays share the same aspect ratio so content can transition between them without major scaling changes.
The phone weighs 254 grams when open and measures only 5.2mm thick when unfolded. Closed, it measures 11.3mm thick. It uses grade 5 titanium and is available in star white and night sky.

Built for productivity
Apple has redesigned iOS 27 for the Duo rather than simply putting standard iPhone software onto a folding screen.
The larger display provides additional room for multitasking, content consumption, gaming and working across applications. Apple is also adding Apple Pencil support through USB-C later this year, allowing users to write, sketch and annotate documents on either display.
That makes the Duo more than a phone with a larger screen. Apple is effectively positioning it between a traditional smartphone and a small tablet while retaining a pocketable folded form.
A20 Pro inside the foldable
The iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro models.
Apple has paired it with a custom vapor chamber and dual-battery architecture. The company says sustained performance can be up to 35% better than the iPhone 17 Pro, while the A20 Pro’s CPU, GPU and Neural Engine provide the processing headroom needed for multitasking and on-device AI.
Battery performance is rated at up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display, up to 44 hours using the outer display, and up to 24 hours of usage when both displays are used equally. Wired charging can reach 50% in around 20 minutes, while compatible MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging can reach 50% in approximately 30 minutes.
The Duo is eSIM-only worldwide and includes Apple’s N1 networking chip and C2 cellular modem system.
Price and availability
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the U.S. with 256GB storage and is also offered in 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations.
Pre-orders begin October 16, with availability starting October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, including India, the UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Germany, France and the UAE.
Apple is entering a foldable market already populated by Samsung, Google, Huawei, Xiaomi and other manufacturers. Reuters described the launch as a major strategic shift for Apple, while AP noted that the Duo’s $1,999 starting price makes it Apple’s most expensive iPhone.
iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone Duo
| Feature | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone Duo |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 6.3-inch OLED | 5.4-inch outer + 7.6-inch inner OLED |
| Design | Traditional smartphone | Foldable titanium design |
| Processor | A20 Pro | A20 Pro |
| Battery | Up to 36 hours video playback | Up to 31 hours inner-display video playback |
| Weight | 211g | 254g open |
| Camera | Advanced Pro camera system | Advanced foldable camera system |
| Starting price | $1,199 | $1,999 |
| Best for | Most premium iPhone users | Productivity and large-screen enthusiasts |
Which should you buy? For most people, the iPhone 18 Pro is the more sensible purchase. It costs $800 less, is lighter and offers Apple’s most advanced conventional camera system.
The Duo makes more sense for buyers who specifically want a foldable experience, a larger screen for multitasking and a device that can replace some tablet-style use.
Apple Watch Series 12

The Apple Watch Series 12 shifts attention toward health intelligence.
It introduces Apple’s new Health Sensing System, which provides higher-frequency heart-rate and heart-rate-variability measurements and enables a new daily readiness score. The system is designed to help users understand how prepared they are for activity based on recent activity, sleep and health measurements.
The watch uses Apple’s S11 chip and comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes. Aluminum models receive Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60% tougher than the previous Ion-X glass.
Battery life remains up to 24 hours, while outdoor workout tracking reaches up to 10 hours. Fast charging has also improved, with 15 minutes providing up to 12 hours of normal use.
Apple is also bringing intelligence features to the wrist. watchOS 27 introduces Siri AI, while Series 12 supports features such as Sound Recognition, Live Rewind and Siri Recap.
The Series 12 starts at $399 and becomes available September 18.
For owners of relatively recent Apple Watches, the health sensing and intelligence improvements are the main reasons to upgrade rather than the basic hardware design.
Apple Watch Ultra 4

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 remains Apple’s choice for serious outdoor users, athletes and people who want maximum battery life.
It introduces the same Health Sensing System and readiness experience as Series 12 but adds a stronger emphasis on endurance. Apple rates it for up to 50 hours of normal use, 84 hours in Low Power Mode and up to 45 hours of outdoor workout tracking using Max Extended Workout mode.
The Ultra 4 also provides Apple’s most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch, according to Apple, and continues the rugged titanium design aimed at hiking, running, diving and adventure activities.
It starts at $799 and becomes available September 18.
Series 12 vs Ultra 4: choose Series 12 if you want a slimmer everyday smartwatch with comprehensive health features. Choose Ultra 4 if battery endurance, outdoor tracking, GPS and ruggedness are more important.
AirPods 5

Apple also introduced AirPods 5, bringing active noise cancellation to its more affordable open-ear design.
Apple says the new multiport acoustic architecture and computational audio reduce external noise by up to 50% more than AirPods 4 with ANC. Transparency mode has also been improved to make surrounding voices and sounds feel more natural.
AirPods 5 support Siri AI, head gestures and Live Translation, extending Apple’s AI ecosystem into everyday conversations.
The standard AirPods 5 cost $129, while AirPods 5 with a Wireless Charging Case cost $149. The latter also adds stem-based volume control and up to five hours of playback with ANC on a single charge, with up to 22 hours through the case.
They go on sale September 18.
The key distinction from AirPods Pro is the open-ear design. Buyers who want a more sealed, premium listening experience and the broadest Pro features should still consider the Pro range, while AirPods 5 are aimed at people who prefer Apple’s lighter open-ear fit and lower price.
Software Announcements: iOS 27, watchOS 27 and Apple Intelligence
Software was an important part of the September 2026 Apple event.
iOS 27 arrives September 14 and brings the next generation of Apple Intelligence, including the new Siri AI in beta. Siri can use personal context from messages, email and photos, understand what is displayed on screen and provide information about objects or content viewed through the Camera app.
Apple is also adding features such as Spatial Reframing, upgraded Clean Up, photorealistic Image Playground images and Notify Me in Safari.
For Apple Watch, watchOS 27 brings Siri AI and new Smart Stack behavior, along with improved fitness and accessibility features.
Apple Intelligence availability remains dependent on supported hardware, languages and regions. Siri AI initially rolls out in beta in supported languages, with additional languages coming later.

2. iPhone 18 Pro Camera
Variable aperture is a meaningful photographic upgrade rather than a specification-sheet change. It gives ordinary users automatic flexibility while giving serious photographers more control.
3. Apple Intelligence Across the Ecosystem
The event showed that Apple’s AI strategy is becoming much more integrated. Siri AI, image tools, health intelligence and Live Translation now connect the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods.
Which New Apple Product Should You Buy?
Best for most iPhone users: iPhone 18 Pro. It offers the core Pro experience without the Duo’s $800 premium.
Best for photography: iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max. The variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera and new Pro controls make these the strongest choice for users who care about photography and video.
Best for productivity: iPhone Duo. Its 7.6-inch display and multitasking-focused iOS experience give it a clear advantage for documents, communication, gaming and content consumption.
Best premium iPhone: iPhone Duo for buyers who want the newest form factor; iPhone 18 Pro Max for buyers who want maximum battery life and a traditional flagship.
Best smartwatch: Apple Watch Series 12 for everyday users; Ultra 4 for athletes, travelers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Best affordable AirPods: AirPods 5. At $129, they bring ANC and Apple’s newer AI features to a much lower price point than the Pro range.
